The Why? The how?
Creative Ideas Come from You Asking the right Questions.
First we need to analyse why are you even asking this question? Maybe you’re trying to come up with a new business venture, or thinking about starting an art career or maybe are just feeling frustrated because they aren’t that creative.
Well Don’t Worry…
You could have searched for how to get more creative ideas, instead you’ve gone looking for the where. Or in this case the source. And in this case, it’s kinda the same thing.
And here it is….
It’s your substance.
“My what?” – You (probably)
Your Essence,
It’s all the different aspects that make you, well you!
I would allude to the fact that creativity and good ideas are much akin to a process, an imperfect, fragmented process.
It can be described as the found accumulation of all your assorted knowledge, your wisdom and a stroke of serendipity. The main ingredients would be your own personal context (experiences, memories, feelings) and time, this is all needed to align for that eureka! Light bulb moment.
What I’m implying is that this sought after “Light bulb Moment” itself is a by-product of the whole process of an idea, a sideshow in the elusive “perfect creative idea” and not the main goal itself.
So how do I apply this to help generate creative ideas?
Really deep dive into your topic,
Consume more Media and find the nearest related Content
Maybe conduct consumer research? Needs, Wants, Concerns?
Or maybe code a python bot to web scrape pictures to create the perfect mood board.
Really learn how to use google to help you deep dive into topics, with key-words and related searches, but to also find others posts online.
Find Books that are good for your topic but just inspire you in general, that you want to generate ideas.
I would then work out where your idea stacks up with others works, art, business strategies, marketing etc. to allow for you to gain more overall context for your idea and see where there is overlap between the successful and your own, then repeat, and repeat and repeat, really refine your idea
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
― Thomas A. Edison
Eventually you will have refined the idea into something in what can stand amongst its peers in whatever genre that fits your idea.
What about People that are Naturally Creative?
This might be a little bit abstract, Kids and people who are deemed as naturally creative have the ability to be more lucid in their use of context of objects, people and rules. They can identify (or are unaware) of the imposed limitations and the proceeding logic of the topic (Cultural,Philosophical,Sciencientific etc.).
This can also be in detriment as kids often draw humans and houses the same size because of this same logic.
If you learn what makes up the basics of a topic, you can then focus on the bending of the rules and of where these ideas might work and then you’ve already generated more from that.
“Life is a lot like jazz… it’s best when you improvise”
― George Gershwin
